Unsupported carriers

Postby Admin on Wed Apr 16, 2008 3:47 am

Hi,

As many of you will know, some carriers employ what's called a "walled garden" approach to their network, which means that users can only access certain "approved" sites. As you've probably guessed, "walled gardens" usually exclude free download sites like MobileRated.com because they want their users to pay for everything. Telus (Canada) is one example of a carrier with a "walled garden".

Other carriers don't support Java applications at all, instead having opted for a alternative system called BREW. Again, the main driver seems to be that BREW is a closed system, and users must pay for all content. Verizon and Alltel (both U.S.A) use BREW.

Fortunately, we DO support at least 90% of the world's carriers, and the trend seems to be towards more openness. It seems probable that virtually all carriers will open up over the next few years.

In the meantime, we'd like to help our users by compiling a list of all of the carriers employing "walled gardens" and BREW. This is where we'd love to have your help to identify them - please post back here, listing the carrier name (and country), and if they're a "walled garden" carrier, or use BREW, or if they are incompatible with MobileRated.com for any other reason.

Thank you!

Well VerizonWireless seems to not allow me to download anything from my wap browser on my LGVX8300. All I get is a page with lots of text on it after I select the download link.

My wife has the InPulse prepaid LG VX8550 from Verizon. Can we download games from your website and then put them on the phone from our PC using a data cable? Thanks!

Read the original post again. Verizon phones don't support Java, so they won't work for you.

So, NONE of the games on http://www.mobilerated.com will work? Are there any non-Java games on there that will work? I mean, you can pick the LG VX8550 from the list of available phones on MobileRated. What's the point if the games won't work? Thanks!

NONE of the games will work for VERIZON phones. You can get the LG VX8550 from other carriers (e.g. Telus in Canada) and those VX8550 phones can run the games with no problems... (The branding is a bit messy - sometimes the non-Verizon models drop the "VX" part (e.g. LG 8550), and sometimes they don't.)

Here's a quote from a happy guy who figured out how to install Java apps on the his LG 8550 from Telus:

"I downloaded a game ( Tetris ) off of telus which cost 7bucks and noticed it created a new folder in BitPim under the BREW>ams. Just a new number for the next application. i seen a .jar file in there and thought, "what the hey, i'll give it a try". i downloaded a few free .jar's and .jad's games and threw them in the the new file for tetris which the file name in bitpim was BREW>ams>16.jar. i didnt touch anything in the folder labled 16, i just added a zelda game i downloaded zelda.jar and zelda.jad dragged it into this folder. and without even reseting my phone, i went to the game and apps folder, and all i seen was Tetris in there. normally when i clicked on Tetris it would ask me to run it, but this time, when i clicked on Tetris it opened with 2 more subicons: Tetris and Zelda! i clicked on each one and both of them loaded and played PERFECTLY! so thats it. its easy!"

Do you get an error message? Other Virgin Mobile users have reported success.
